Alumni Mentor Program

Dear General Engineering Alumni,

Thank you for expressing interest in the General Engineering Mentor Program. The purpose of the program is to give General Engineering students an additional resource in planning their education and career. The program, run primarily by General Engineering alumni, connects a current General Engineering student with a General Engineering graduate. The program provides an opportunity for students to seek professional input and graduates to have more interaction with the University. Ultimately, the program seeks to provide professional "real world" guidance to students, resulting in more marketable, prepared, and aware General Engineering graduates.

The mentor will make initial contact with the student; however, once initial contact is made, the participants can decide together how they would like to interact. The mentor should:

  • Communicate with the student via email or phone, or in person if feasible.
  • Relay information to the student regarding his/her employer and the projects in which they have been involved.
  • Show the student his/her resume.
  • Be a resource for the student in any or all of the following areas:
    Selecting a Field of Concentration
The transition from school to work
    Further Education, Advanced Degrees
    Employee Contacts
    Interviewing and Resumes
    Qualities employers desire in graduates
    Internships and Co-ops
    Career alternatives

Each student will get one mentor and at the end of the school year, both the student and the mentor will be asked for feedback regarding the Mentor Program.

We pair mentors with GE students in September, after the start of the semester. If you are interested in becoming a mentor for one or more students, please complete the mentor application by August 1st. If you have any further questions on the program, feel free to contact Angie Dimit at 217-333-0140 or adimit@uiuc.edu.

Thank you for your interest and participation in this program.
