Guest Speaker Opportunities

The following is a brief introduction and explanation of the opportunities available for General Engineering alumni to spend time with current undergraduates in the classroom.

GE 291 SENIOR SEMINAR - "Leadership and Life Skills"
GE 291 is a course designed to expose our seniors to real-world issues to better prepare them for entering the workforce. We would like to maximize the opportunities for exposing our seniors to the diverse career accomplishments of our General Engineering Alumni. Past topics have included: presentations on life experiences and professional opportunities, engineering ethics, entrepreneurship, marketing yourself and your ideas, dealing with attorneys, persuasion and negotiation, money management, what to look for in a job offer. GE 291 meets Wednesdays at 12 Noon for 1 hour. If you are interested in being a guest speaker for GE 291 or need additional information, please contact Angie Dimit at m-dimit@uiuc.edu.

ENGINEER IN RESIDENCE
The ENGINEER IN RESIDENCE program was established with a gift from Thomas A Prickett, 1997-1999 President of the General Engineering Alumni and Industry Advisory Board. Having spoken to our GE 291 students for several years, Tom understands how quickly 1 hour goes by! He wanted to give alumni and students more of a chance to interact and discuss issues on a personal level, especially questions that might be related to the presentation and careers.

The ENGINEER IN RESIDENCE program includes:

Spending approximately 24 hours on campus.
Speaking to our GE 291 class on Wednesday at 12 Noon.
Staying "in residence" for an afternoon and/or morning for individual appointments in a private office.
Enjoying an informal time with our students over a pizza in the early evening.
Receiving a $250 honorarium to assist with travel and lodging expenses.

If you are interested, please contact Angie Dimit at m-dimit@uiuc.edu.

TOTAL QUALITY EDUCATION (TQE)
TQE is a cooperative effort between alumni, industry, students, and faculty that aims to empower General Engineering students to obtain the highest quality education through the team approach. TQE was developed by Prof. David Goldberg and is currently facilitated/taught by Angie Dimit. The course objective is to provide a foundation of knowledge and understanding of "project management by team" through hands-on experience and exposure to real world factors. This course includes freshman-to-senior integration and is encouraged as preparation for GE 342 Senior Design Projects.

Topics include: project unity, project management/planning, presentation skills, interpersonal communication skills, leadership, dealing with conflict, understanding customer needs, influencing change, competencies and evaluations, quality circle, Six Sigma, TQM, etc. We are VERY interested in having company representatives (preferably alumni, but not required) as guest speakers. We would like to expose these students to such things as our commonly included in corporate professional development programs. TQE meets Mondays at 12 Noon, but often evening presentations (5:00-7:00 p.m.) are held instead for scheduling purposes. Please contact Angie Dimit at m-dimit@uiuc.edu if you or your company would be interested. This is great exposure for recruiting!!
