The Mary Chow Scholarship
Was presented for the first time
at the Spring 2000 Awards Banquet.
Awarded to a woman in General Engineering based upon academic
merit at the end of the freshman year.
Professor
Weichien Chow, a former faculty member in General Engineering,
established this award in honor of his late wife, Mary Chow.
After receiving a BS degree in Agricultural Economics from
the University of Nanking, China, an MA degree in Library
Science from Rosary College, Illinois, Mary Chow worked
for a number of years at the University of Illinois. She
was employed as both an agricultural economist within the
Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics and as
a librarian in the Asian Library. She tremendously enjoyed
her involvement with students and firmly believed in the
value of an advanced education.
Professor Weichien Chow completed a BS degree in Mechanical
Engineering at the Lester Institute of Technology, China,
and both an MS and PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the
University of Wisconsin before spending thirty yeas working
in industry as a design engineer. He joined the Department
of General Engineering in 1978, where he stayed until his
retirement in 1991. The Chows have four sons, three of whom
are graduates of the University of Illinois.
