Randolph P. Hoelscher Award for Outstanding Junior
To the Junior in General Engineering
who has achieved exceptional scholarship, leadership,
and cultural breadth.
Professor
Randolph P. Hoelscher obtained his B.S. in Civil Engineering
from Purdue University in 1912, his M.S. from the University
of Illinois in 1927, and a C.E. from Purdue in 1929. Prior
to coming to the University of Illinois in 1918, he was
a structural engineer from 1912 to 1916, and from 1916-1918,
he was an instructor of physics at Baldwin-Wallace College.
In
1918 he was appointed an instructor in General Engineering
Drawing and rose through the ranks to a professorship in
1931. From 1946 to 1949 he served as associate dean of Engineering
Sciences at the Navy Pier campus of the University of Illinois
in Chicago. In September of 1949, he returned to the Urbana
campus to become Head of the Department of Engineering Drawing,
succeeding Professor Jordan.
Randolph
Hoelscher was the first Head of the Department of General
Engineering until his retirement in September of 1959. During
his career he was a prolific co-author of engineering drawing
textbooks. He was also active in the American Standards
Association, and the American Society for Engineering Education.
